Research Interests

When I came into this field from plasma physics and nuclear fusion research, I went right into helical tomotherapy research with Prof. Rock Mackie. Over the years, I continued to publish on some of the more theoretical aspects of radiation therapy, tomotherapy in particular, especially the radiation intensity modulation patterns unique to this device. I realized that proper choices during planning and set-up could make the treatment more robust to dose errors inside the tumor for a very wide variety of treatments. More recently, I have become convinced that the quality control process for tumor motion with IMRT is lacking. The proper choices we make that respect the fundamental modulation patterns are also ones that should be considered by default for a wide variety of treatments. In fact, advanced quality control for motion and IMRT will require a more complete understanding of the dynamic coupling between all motions, including that of the patient.

In the future, radiation therapy is expected to evolve away from uniform dose prescriptions inside the tumor to a more biologically meaningful pattern, a heterogeneous dose distribution. Along with many others, I am searching for robust and cost effective ways to delivery these patterns and what the limitations of the pattern complexity will be for each unique dose delivery modality. Instead of the more typical approach of adding to the ever increasing layers of complexity involved with modern radiation therapy, I always try to look for ways to design inherently more robust treatments from a more systems engineering, theoretical foundation.
