The Department of Medical Physics is part of the National Science Foundation funded Grid Laboratory of Wisconsin (GLOW).  This is a  500+ node "cluster of clusters" consisting of 6 sites around campus.   Each department hosts and has dedicated access to 66-165 dual processor compute nodes with spare cycles from each site being made available to the other participating groups.
The UW-Medical Physics portion of the GLOW computer cluster currently consists of 95 1U rack mount computers running Scientific Linux.  Each compute node has 2 Intel Xeon processors and 2 GB of memory.  The computers are interconnected by a Gigabit/sec network.
The software available on the cluster includes the MPICH message passing library, as well as GNU and Portland Group FORTRAN, C, and C++ compilers and the Condor job scheduler. The Condor job scheduler supports both serial and parallel jobs.  Production software installed includes the MCNP and MCNPX Monte Carlo codes and Matlab.
Medical Physics groups currently using the cluster include the radiation dosimetry groups and the ultrasound group.  The dosimetry groups use Monte Carlo based radiation transport
in a variety of areas including brachytherapy source characterization and dosimetry, external beam dosimetry, fast neutron beam characterization, proton dosimetry, and radiation detector characterization and design.  The Ultrasound group also makes extensive use of the cluster for ultrasound beam simulations.
