CURRENT NCRP
DOSE LIMITS
The National Council on Radiation Protection and
Measurements (NCRP) is a non-profit corporation chartered by the US Congress in
1964. The recommendations of the NCRP
are not themselves government regulations, however many government regulations
concerning radiation are derived from NCPR recommendations and reports. The dose limits below are in the process of
being incorporated into federal and state regulations.
Remember:
Effective
Dose: Takes into account non-uniform
exposures of the body.
The
effective dose that describes a non-uniform exposure poses the same risk of
cancer and genetic effects as that same dose received uniformly over the body.
Occupational Dose Limits:
50 mSv (5 rem)
- annual effective dose limit
and
10 mSv (1 rem)
x age (y) - cumulative effective
dose limit
150 mSv (15 rem) - annual equivalent dose
limit to lens of eye
500 mSv (50 rem) - annual equivalent dose
limit to skin, hands, and feet
Public Dose Limits:
1 mSv (0.1 rem) - annual effective dose
limit for continuous exposure
5 mSv (0.5 rem) - annual effective dose
limit for infrequent exposure
50 mSv (5 rem) - annual effective dose
limit to lens of eye, skin, and extremities
Embryo-fetus:
0.5 mSv (0.05 rem
-- 50 mrem) -- equivalent dose limit
in a month once
pregnancy
