Collagen Alignment Imaging and Analysis for Breast Cancer Classification

Jeremy Bredfeldt (Student of Dr. Rockwell T. Mackie and Kevin Eliceiri)
Research Assistant, Department of Medical Physics, UW-School of Medicine & Public Health, Madison, WI - USA -

Physicians need better tools to predict breast cancer patient outcome. Ideally, these tools would adapt to clinical workflows and require little human intervention. In this talk, I will describe semi-automated, clinically relevant optical imaging and model-based analysis tools for quantifying whether collagen alignment can predict breast cancer patient outcome. The resulting tools are being used to further develop collagen alignment as a biomarker for breast cancer and other cancers. I will present results showing the potential of this imaging biomarker to aid in breast cancer patient prognosis. Future planned studies will use our platform to quantify response to collagen targeted drugs and genetic modifications in model systems.
