In an increasingly instrumented world, our actions will become more directed by real-time evidence than models or assumptions. This paradigm affects all elements of society and is expected to profoundly impact the practice of medicine. If the future of medicine is measurement followed by directed response, the role of experts in measurement and the management of uncertainty, such as, medical physicists will be heightened. We are seeing this paradigm emerge in the context of image-guided intervention, wherein image-based measurements are being tightly integrated into many aspects of care. This is clearly the case in cancer intervention, including the domains of radiotherapy, surgery, and drug delivery. While this paradigm opens exciting new opportunities for advancing care, it also creates very exciting opportunities for the field of medical physics. In this presentation, these topics will be raised in the context of cancer care and the presenter will highlight opportunities for the future of medical physics in an ‘instrumented world’.
