The Development of Modern Angiography

speaker

Charles A. Mistretta, PhD
John R. Cameron Professor, Depts of Medical Physics, Radiology & Biomedical Engineering

We will trace the development of angiographic imaging over the past 40 years beginning with DSA which provided a factor of 10,000 acceleration in image availability relative to darkroom film subtraction and provided the enabling technology for the field of interventional radiology. We will then discuss the development of highly undersampled, primarily non-Cartesian, data acquisition and constrained reconstruction that were applied in MR angiography leading to violations of the Nyquist theorem by factors as large as 800. Finally we will discuss how these techniques were translated to time-resolved C-arm X-Ray angiography where with 4D DSA we have increased the rate of acquiring 3D angiographic volumes by a factor of 300.
