Creating Research that Translates to Widespread Clinical Use, or Not!
Michelle Svatos, PhD (hosted by Dr. Larry DeWerd)
Medical Device Executive, Celestial Medical - USA
This talk will take a 20-year retrospective look at Radiation Therapy research projects that were attempted translations to commercial and/or clinical use, with examples of failures, successes, and many projects in between. Some common characteristics of successful projects are identified, likewise for ones that don’t make it to full deployment. The role of Translational Research throughout medical device development steps will be explained. Many examples from a career working for 2 large companies (Siemens, Varian), 2 small start-ups, and a National Lab will be used to illustrate the meta-research analysis concepts.
