The University of Wisconsin Department of Medical Physics has supported its Accredited Dosimetry Calibration Laboratory (ADCL) for over 30 years and it continues to be the largest and most comprehensive ADCL in the US. But what is an ADCL and why is it important? What is traceability? A detailed description of the ADCL and its primary functions will be presented. It takes more effort than most people realize to create an accurate and precise dosimetry standard. Additionally, a variety of research projects will be presented that are underway to help pave the way towards future dosimetry standardization. With the constant advances in diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy delivery platforms, a host of new standards are needed to ensure the safest therapies for every patient. Efforts are underway to implement a linear-accelerator based absorbed dose to water calibration, a new line of NIST-traceable x-ray beams for radiobiology experiments, and implement a spherical windowless extrapolation chamber for measurements of absorbed dose to water
