Medical imaging today can appear to be dominated by radiologic x-ray, ultrasound and MRI, yet the technical device market sector of optics in medicine is nearly twice the size of all of radiology. The strengths of optical imaging are features such as molecular sensitivity, ultrawide ranges of resolution, commercial packaging for low cost, and safety and ease of use, all make optical tools the ideal for ‘point-of-care’. Optics is also the choice for high end analytics such as genomics and proteomics. Areas of growth and opportunity are in bringing these more advanced tools to the patient diagnosis, for either faster or more accurate decision making. Examples of new systems in medicine will be illustrated from molecular guided surgery and non-invasive radiation dosimetry.
