Fan Beam Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy

Patrick Hill (student of Dr. T. Rockwell Mackie)

Proton therapy is increasing in prevalence worldwide, however only a handful of facilities have the ability to offer the tissue sparing benefits gained from intensity modulation. This seminar will present the concept of fan beam proton therapy, which aims to deliver intensity modulated proton therapy in a Tomotherapy-like geometry. Designs and performance characteristics will be presented for a novel range and intensity modulation system, necessary for the delivery of proton therapy using a fan beam. The complexities of the modulation system are accounted for using Monte Carlo dose calculations, and highlights will also be presented on the development and operation of a combination MATLAB/MCNPX treatment planning system.
