Public access to publications: Professional and ethical considerations for authors.
Ryan Schryver

Most principal investigators (PI’s) with federal awards are required by the terms of that funding to ensure that any peer-reviewed paper derived from research sponsored by their award is made publicly accessible by being placed in the funder’s repository. Failure to meet this mandate could potentially lead to the PI’s award being frozen or cancelled. While the non-PI authors of these papers may not be contractually required to participate in the public access process, I contend that they have a professional and ethical responsibility to the PI’s whose award(s) supported their effort to place their papers in a position where they can easily become publicly accessible.
