Starting up companies has been a constant part of the faculty, staff and students in the department of medical physics, creating industry that produces commercial and scientific products that synergize with the mission of academic research and translational medicine. These entrepreneurial activities are the ultimate conduit for most inventions that can lead to useful medical products. Additionally, these companies and the people who found them, produce career opportunities for students who become future employees and employers. The robust ecosystem that exists today around medical physics startups includes areas such as dosimetry, phantoms, imaging systems, therapy systems, software and unique hardware. In this seminar, 3 members of our community will discuss their experiences in starting companies and answer questions related to the value and need for a startup culture surrounding a thriving research program.
