On Trajectory Uncertainty and the Limited Range Problem for Proton Computed Tomography

Proton computed tomography (pCT) is expected to accurately reconstruct proton stopping power images, useful for proton therapy treatment planning and delivery. Two issues exist for pCT. First, due to the stochastic nature of multiple Coulomb scattering (MCS), individual proton trajectories inside the imaging object are unknown and need to be estimated. Second, protons of a given energy have a limited range, and may not be able penetrate an imaging object in all view angles if the object is too large. This study will address these two issues and try to provide some solutions.
