Cone beam CT in radiation therapy: Devices, Techniques and Doses

Parham Alaei, Ph.D. (guest of Dr. Larry DeWerd)
Associate Professor, Department of Therapeutic Radiology-Radiation Oncology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN USA

Cone beam CT (CBCT) is routinely used for patient positioning verification during radiation therapy treatments. Even though this imaging modality improves patient positioning, it may add additional challenges in terms of the dose delivered to patient.
Depending on the frequency of imaging, beam quality, and protocols used, this dose may become significant for certain procedures and patient populations. This warrants development of methods to account for this dose, or to include it in the patient treatment plans. Various CBCT devices and techniques, doses delivered to patients as a result of CBCT imaging, methods to reduce the dose, and recent progress in including the imaging dose in the treatment plans will be discussed.
